How I fell in love with my clothes again & inadvertently changed my attitude towards my life
Updated: Oct 5, 2021

On Saturday, I took the best part of the afternoon to really go through my wardrobe and press re-set on my old ways of dressing. I hadn't sorted my wardrobe thoroughly in 5 years! But, of course, I lovingly blame having young children and my busy life. Now was the time, though!
It comes down to falling in love with your clothes again or falling in love with them for the first time.
What I am working with furniture wise:
I have one standard size double wardrobe and no chest of drawers. I have 3 shelves for my shoes, and I keep my dog walking boots and gardening clogs in a cupboard downstairs. My coats are in the understairs cupboard. My PJ's and running stuff are also in this wardrobe, but I have not counted them in my final edit of clothes which ended up as 50 pieces of seasonal clothing.
Do I feel I have enough clothes and shoes now? Yes, if I'm editing them regularly and storing items away, that will not be worn for 6 months because they are seasonal/too small/ too big or that I don't love. Before Saturday, I had clothes EVERYWHERE!
After I got all of my clothing out and onto the bed, a feeling washed over me, one of hope and anticipation. I thought: "I am only going to put back items that I love, and that meets my three style keywords, which are: freedom (the meaning for me is lots of different styles and looks), boho-luxe (bohemian means socially unconventional in an artistic way; but make it luxurious!), and romantic. I am a sucker for feminine pieces that feel ethereal and witchy. Witch: a woman who has magical powers and uses them to harm or help other people. I'm focusing on the latter!

For honesty, on Saturday, I put three HUGE bags of clothes and shoes in the attic to return to in the Spring. I love doing this because when I open the bag again, it will be like discovering old friends or confirming a goodbye to once good friends but no longer.
We are in relationships with our clothing.
The clothes that are still too small I will be saying goodbye to. The clothes I feel I have moved on from I will sell or swap with friends.
The wardrobe sorting took all afternoon, but my goodness, it was so worth it!
Sometimes we have to get it all out and look at things for what they really are; this is true for wardrobes and personal and work relationships. I believe that doing a thorough clean and sort of wardrobes every 6 months is crucial for us to feel better in ourselves. It is something you can empower yourself to do. I am always on hand for styling assistance and getting you up and running with a fabulously sorted, organised wardrobe full of clothes you love and wear. Please see below.
On Saturday I not only organised my wardrobe but my entire room. I feel excited about going to my wardrobe now and picking out different outfit combinations. I was apathetic before. I had no interest in my clothing, and I wasn't enthused by them. Now I realise it's because I hadn't taken the time, really taken the time to consider what I wanted out of my clothes for who I am today. By pulling all my clothing out and starting fresh in the wardrobe, I got to control the narrative for who I am now and fall back in love with my clothes.
My whole outlook on getting dressed has changed! I now find myself with the desire to plan my outfits the night before. I love being in my bedroom and being in my wardrobe. I find it all very inspiring after Saturday. It was an effort, of course, but the work is paying huge dividends already with how I feel about myself, my clothing and my life.
I know it's only been a few days, but the changes have been significant and consistent so far. With an organised and beautiful-to-me wardrobe and a room that I love to spend time in, I find that I am getting up an hour earlier. I am conquering the day instead of the day conquering me. I am eating better, and I feel more content and happier.
Getting dressed should be a joy, and now for me, it is! How magical is that!
