Six transitional casual pieces to take you into autumn.

Autumn is on the breeze now. The leaves are slowly turning different shades of gold, brown and red. The nights have started to get longer and you may need a comforter blanket on your bed when you go to sleep. Whilst the weather in the day is expected to reach 20 degrees this week, there is no escaping the colder mornings and the colder and darker evenings.
Our knitwear is being worn again. We have entered the phase of having to take jumpers off when it gets warm and then put them on again ten minutes later because it has got chilly. At this time of year, lightweight cardigans and jumpers in cotton and linen will help you stay warm in the day but not so warm that you overheat. Currently, I would advise against wool or cashmere during the day, instead save these beauties for the mornings and evenings, and if you can next month when the weather drops again.
Below I have selected a few pieces that will take you seamlessly from summer to autumn. All of these items can be mixed and matched, and worn together.
The dress
This dress is by Sezane and online they have sizes 16 and 18 left. However, you will be able to purchase it in-store or at Selfridges department store. Be quick though because it is a beauty and not likely to hang around for long.
How to style it:
A waist belt and ankle boots will look really gorgeous with this dress. Throw on a done up cropped cardigan is navy or peach for a more provincial feel, or pair it with a longer cardigan for a more elegant finish.
The cardigan
This cardigan from Toast is for the cooler days.
How to style it
Pair done up and tucked into jeans and worn with trainers for a stylish and sporty look. You may want to put a beautiful camisole underneath.
Swap the trainers for ballet pumps, add a couple of layered necklaces and tie your hair in a low bun for a Parisian feel.
The below long cardigan is perfect to wrap yourself up in. It comes with an elegant and cosy funnel neck.
How to style it.
As the cardigan has a jazzy pattern keep what's underneath simple. Try wide-legged trousers and a vest top worn with trainers or a plain midi dress and knee-high boots.

How to style it
This type of cardigan really comes into its own when paired with jeans and leggings, or a beautiful shift or slip dress.
The ankle boots
The ankle boot comes in many shapes and different heights. If you have more of a classic personality look for more streamlined boots, for the more dramatics and creatives amongst us look for something with details. Try buckles, pattern and embellished designs. For those with a more natural air to their personality, a utilitarian boot like a classic Dr Matin will meet your functional style statement.
The AllSaints ankle boots below sit quite high on the ankle and will cut you off dramatically at the leg but worn correctly these boots will keep on giving you sartorial joy. These boots also have a pointed toe which will help streamline your silhouette.
How to style it
For a streamlined look pair with black jeans and leggings. When wearing dresses pair with black tights if you have heavy legs. Avoid wearing these boots with very light colours such as beige, ivory and white unless you are going for a punky look. Complete the look with a military-inspired coat.
Ah, the Dr Martins boot is such a classic.
How to style it
Pair with a midi skirt, jeans and leggings for a flattering look. If you have heavy legs avoid wearing with shorter dresses and skirts as it will stunt your length rather than elongating the body. Pair with high waisted jeans and an open checked shirt and vest top for a 90's vibe.
The layering piece
It really is important to have a long-sleeved t-shirt that you can layer under dresses and other tops for warmth. A layer that is light and that will sit seamlessly under other clothes. The long-sleeved t-shirt below by John Lewis ticks all of these boxes and comes in a variety of colours too.
How to style it
Wear under anything for an extra layer or wear alone with a pencil skirt or wide-leg trousers and some statement jewellery.
The jacket

How to style it
Throw over jeans, trousers, joggers, dresses. Pair with skirts and a t-shirt and enjoy its fashionable cosiness.
For a more refined coat that will make a beautiful colour statement look no further than this snuggly item from We Are Thought. One of the more sustainable pieces in this edit.
How to style it
It again can be dressed up and down. This coat would look beautiful with an autumnal patterned midi dress and knee-high boots in brown, green, dark red or black.

The house shoe
To feel elevated when working from home think slippers but better. Wear with casual tailoring for a 'bossing it' working-from-home look
